Non-ionic detergent widely used for membrane proteins.
For solubilization of membrane-bound proteins in their native state, and for preparation of lipid vesicles. Low molecular weight permits easy removal by dialysis. Useful for solubilizing cytochrome C oxidase, insulin receptors of the turkey erythrocyte membrane and phosphatidylcholine bi-layers.

Zwitterionic detergent. Non-denaturing.
Electrically neutral.
Higher solubility than CHAPS because of a more polar head group.
Solubilizes membrane proteins in their native state.
Solubilizes opiate receptor to a state exhibiting reversible binding of opiates. Purity > 99% by TLC.
Conductivity < 50 micromhos in 10% solution.

ASB-14 has been shown to solubilize membrane proteins previously undetected. Reported to show better protein solubilization properties than CHAPS.
