For solubilization of membrane-bound proteins in their native state, and for preparation of lipid vesicles. Low molecular weight permits easy removal by dialysis. Useful for solubilizing cytochrome C oxidase, insulin receptors of the turkey erythrocyte membrane and phosphatidylcholine bi-layers.
