A thin sheet fabricated from a polyolefin material. The flexibility of the sheet helps to eliminate air bubbles. Gel handler protects the surface of the transilluminator from cuts and scratches when exicsing segments of a gel with a razor or spatula. Gel handler has better UV transparency than acrylic for photographing. Optical density for the 5mil thick sheets at 254 and 300nm emission wavelengths of the transilluminator are 0.14 and 0.04 respectively. A polyolefin composition allows for acid washing as well as autoclaving without chemical reaction.
