Proteases are present in almost all biological samples. Proteases are involved in processing cellular signals and post-translation modification of protein molecules. In cell free extracts proteases become a major concern for protein protection. When performing protein preparation it is often important to consider the role of proteases in your samples. In protein purification projects arresting proteolysis activity is critical otherwise the proteins of interest may be seriously damaged. Protease inhibitors are hence routinely used to protect proteins during purifcation schemes.
